A few words about Corfu Island

Corfu (or Kerkyra as the Greek name the island) with approx. 588 Km² in area (227 sq. miles), is one of the most privileged islands in the Ionian Sea of Greece. It is the "gate" to the Adriatic Sea, closer to Italy and the rest of Europe, than any other Greek area, and very close to the Greek coast. The western coasts are steep and without ports, whilst the east coasts are smooth, with many beautiful bays. The morphology of the ground is multifarious, composed by fertile plains, hills and mountains covered by extended olive groves, calm beaches, steep coasts and caps.

The Historical Centre of Corfu (Old Town) was mainly developed without constant plans (dynamic building activity). Its main element are the narrow crooked roads, the small squares and high buildings with many storeys. This tightness of the area and the economical use of ground, however, gives the Town its picturesque and unique character. The labyrinth network of the streets with the arched gateways and ground floors, the tiny squares and all the other unbuilt areas offer the visitor strolling unforgettable impressions. The Town's characteristic picture is given by the impressive mansions and the strictly official buildings of the Venetian architecture, next to the nameless and timeless popular architectural style, the small chapels with characteristic high campaniles, as well as the more recent neo-classical buildings from the time of the British and the French rule.
Corfu is also fun. Here you can find one the best golf-fields of Greece, a cricket-field and many tennis terrains, bowling arenas as well as many SPA resorts and the best Water-Park of Europe. The yacht marine, international sea and air-port are either new or renovated. On various occasions and all through the year, musical bands play music in the streets and invites you to drink a coffee or a glass of wine in one of the many cafes in the famous Liston plaza. You will feel as if you where in the rue de Rivoli of Paris!
